First perform a compression and cylinder leakage tests. This is the easiest way to determine the condition of your engine. You might not need a complete engine rebuild. Follow the steps in your repair manual to perform these tests.

Before rebuilding the engine yourself, read the entire section on engine rebuilding in your truck repair manual to know all the steps to perform.

Decide if you have the tools, knowledge and time to due the work yourself. If you can do it yourself, you can save the cost of labor, but you have no warranty.

Decide if you want a local machine shop to do the work. Check their warranties and see if it matters who installs the parts.

You can also order re-manufactured parts or a crate engine. This option has the shortest downtime and a warranty.

Decide if you want the do only the head, only the bottom end, or the entire engine.

Before you start, determine the costs with each option.

Don't skip steps to save money. For example, if rebuilding the bottom end, have the block hot tanked, replace the oil pump, etc.
