i have a 89 mighty max macro cab with the old inline 4, 2.0 liter engine in it. i found out that it only has 90 horsepower and 109 torque... and has a old carb too. i was thinking of swaping out the engine out with a v-6 or something close to that but dont know what would work in it. any suggestionS

I recently converted my 89 with a carb to a 3.0 V6. Big job. You need a donor pu. When going from a carb to fuel injected you have to change wireing harness, ecu, fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines. To go from a 4 cyl to 6 you have to change the transmission, clutch from cable to hydraulic. I am very happy with the way mine turned out. Lots of power and 20mpg but I could not have done it without a complete pu to take parts off of. Oh, I also had to rebuild the engine.

There's a guy on Seattle Craigslist looking to drop in a diesel into the pre-90 MM's or D-50's. Claims to have done several successfully.

The engine he used came out of another Mighty Max/D50. Some of them(90+ 4x4 I think) came with the 3.0L v6 6G72

Engine came out of a 91 MM. Can't tell you how many hours, worked on it for several months. I had a diesel in it before and it was a pretty easy swap. It bolts right up to the existing transmission, but after I blew the top off of a piston I lost interest. The key is to find a complete donor.

The v6 6G72 was used in a ton of Mitsus like MM, Montero, Diamonte, 3000, so they are fairly easy to find. I got one of the low mileage Japanese imports pretty cheap and it's worked out really well in my '91.

If you went with anything other than a Mits engine you would be in for a lot of extra custom work. Stick with something that will bolt up. Electrical would be a nightmare also.

I have a Diamonte engine in my '91 and there were only a few items to swap, the main one being the oil pan. No changes electrically and am using my original computer as well. It's a little higher compression version than the MM but the swap was quite straight forward.

He has an 89. He will have to change everything, even with a Mits engine.
